  • Irwin Ruderman

    DVM

    Dr. Irwin Ruderman, DVM, CVA, CVT, CVH. Dr. Ruderman grew up on Long Island with a large variety of pets. He was the human to dogs, cats, birds, turtles, rabbits, iguanas and the list goes on. During his high school years he played keyboards in a rock and roll band. He also studied martial arts during those years. After high school, Dr. Ruderman went to Monmouth College, then to Oklahoma State, finally settling at The Ohio State University. He got his Veterinary Technician license in 1975 and earned his B.Sc. in Zoology in 1976. While at Ohio State he lived over an animal hospital working full time and going to school part-time. Veterinary school took Dr. Ruderman even farther from home - Milan, Italy. Not only did he move to Italy but he also had to learn to speak, read, and write the language first. Many are surprised to find a jewish veterinarian fluent in italian! Six years in Italy also gave him a appreciation for italian wines. Some of his hobbies, just like his medicine find origins in the East: Bonsai, collecting Japanese swords and sword fittings, fishing, and target shooting. He also enjoys cooking. His personal accomplisments include a black belt in Shorin-Ryu karate hitch hicking alone from Turkey to Spain. Dr. Ruderman with the help of his wife Cindy and two children, Philip & Emily has also raised and bred Blue and Gold Macaws and Goffin's Cockatoos. He's only had his wife for 21 years, but he's had is male Blue and Gold Macaw named Melissa for approximately 30 years. He also has 2 other Macaws. Rosebud and Peta; a Russian Tortoise; a bearded dragon; and 3 dogs - Sadie a 130 lb. full of energy Newfoundland, his 2 other dogs, both rescues, are Maggie a Bichon, and Sophie an English Bulldog. Dr. Ruderman adds "My theory is, if you have enough health equipment, you will lose weight just moving it around while dusting it." Dr. Ruderman has lectured at the New York Turtle & Tortoise Society, The Staten Island Herp Club, The Big Apple Bird Club in Manhattan, The Staten Island Horticultural Society and has blogged for The Staten Island Advance on SILive.com in the pet care section.     DVM

    Dr. Viado is a 1977 graduate of The University of the Philippines in Dilman, Quezon City. Prior to joining our practice in 1985, Dr. Viado made house calls in Brooklyn, New York. Many veterinarians develop a passion for a specific field of interest in veterinary medicine - for Dr. Viado that passion is surgery. Possessing a keen eye and steady, skilled hands, Dr. Viado is recognized among our affiliated veterinarians as one of the best surgeons on Staten Island. Dr. Viado also has a cockatiel named Sunshine. He also holds dear to his heart the memory of his chihuahua named Noodles, a very special dog.

    DVM

    Dr. Christine Asaro graduated from the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, West Indies in February 2000. After graduation, Dr. Asaro completed her clinical year at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. She is a member of AVMA, LIVMA and VMA of New York City. For the past nine years, she has been practicing in the metropolitan area with a main focus in small animal medicine.
